Adam's Brunoise Dice - $5 Physics Quiz

  • Adam's Brunoise Dice - $5 physics quiz

Adam Petropoulos recently got admitted to the culinary institute named Le Monde in Athens, Greece. His career goal was to become a chef.  He loved food!  He wanted to learn the art of flavoring different kinds of food for mouthwatering meals! He was indeed a foodie and was super exited to start his first culinary class at Le Monde.

One fine morning in August, on the very first day of his culinary class, Adam entered his kitchen classroom.  His culinary teacher was a head chef at Taziki's Table, which was a popular Greek restaurant in Athens.  His teacher greeted him inside the class and asked him to stand at a nearby kitchen table in the classroom. Adam was surprised to see so many different knives of different sizes, shapes and sharpness lying on the table. His first culinary lesson would be to learn the art of cutting, chopping and slicing foods of different textures.

His first instruction was to cut a carrot in a brunoise cut style. Brunoise cut is a special type of cutting food into a smaller uniform shaped cubes.  So, his teacher first demonstrated how to do a brunoise cut on carrots with an extremely sharp knife. The head chef's quick art of chopping with the super sharp knife was an interesting thing to see!  His teacher then asked Adam to try the same technique.  Thinking that a sharp knife might be too dangerous in his first day of class, Adam picked up a very dull and blunt knife in his first lesson and started cutting his carrots for a brunoise cut.  But his task was not going well!  In fact, he almost cut his hands with the blunt knife. His teacher immediately rushed to Adam's table and explained why blunt knife in cutting foods could be extremely dangerous! His teacher mentioned that sharp knife was the safest and most efficient in cutting any kind of food.

Adam was completely surprised to learn that a sharp knife was safer for cutting food. He thought blunt knife was safer, but his teacher just told him the opposite!

Now for our quiz question today,  answer the following:

Using the concepts of physics, explain why a sharper knife is safer in cutting food compared to a blunt knife? (BONUS:  You will be given a $2 bonus in addition to the regular $5 winning prize if you can use the correct equation in physics to describe this knife phenomenon)

Please try to write your answer in 185 words or less in the comments section below. Please submit your answer by June 27th midnight, Bangladesh time. Then, we will share everyone's answers and start a discussion on this topic. The person with the best, clear, easy to understand, and non plagiarized explanation will get $5. Runner-up will get $3. A $2 bonus will be given to the winner who can use a physics equation to clearly explain their answer to a non-technical audience with zero physics knowledge.  So its not what you say, but how you say it to make your answer interesting to read!

The winner of this quiz is:

    Nanjiba Naowar (Winner $7)

    Tanveer Tausif Ratul (Runner-up $3)

In this quiz project, the admins were looking for good and easy to understand explanations, something that were short, simple, to the point where the equation was explained very well for people with limited knowledge on physics and math. Based on those criterias, the winners were chosen.

Everyone's answers had something new to offer and it helped in our learning process. So thank you to everyone for educating us with your ideas. Please scroll through everyone's answers in the comments section below.

Aria Hossain In physics force=pressure/area. In order to cut food, you have to exert force. According to the equation, force is directly proportional to pressure. A blunt knife has more area around the cutting edge than a sharp knife. So a blunt knife requires more...  more

Abdullah Julaybib Firstly, you’ll need more pressure to use a blunt knife.
P=F/A, for a fixed area, force is directly proportional to pressure. If the
area of a blunt and a sharp knife is same, then doubling the pressure on blunt
knife means doubling the force....  more

Abhay Sunny Pressure= force/area, area of sharp knife is less than area of blunt knife, p is proportional to 1/area, so pressure of sharp knife is more than blunt knife.Don't get confused with the wight and pressuring, pressure is the force on a unit area that is...  more

Abdullah Masud This is simply an example of pressure in our daily lives. Here, according to Pascal's law (P = f/a, where pressure is the force applied over a certain area), the sharp knife can exert greater pressure than the blunt knife, as the sharper knife has less...  more
