Mr. Ethan's Dilemma

  • Mr. Ethan's Dilemma

Mr. Ethan was a senior political leader in a village near the Dhaka District. He also used to be a professor of Dhaka University before his political career. He was highly respected in his village community as he did an outstanding job of taking care of his community.  So, everything was going well with him until the novel Coronavirus hit his village quite hard on March, 2021. Mr. Ethan's tight-knit village community was devastated with this pandemic. The situation was getting worse day by day!

Mr. Ethan was getting worried about how to manage this situation in his village.  The virus was ravaging his community as well as all other districts of Bangladesh.  So, Mr. Ethan met with other senior government officials and they all decided to implement a country-wide lockdown for a month. He thought that with this lockdown, the virus may come under control and hopefully stop the spread. However, the lockdown backfired! Many people in his community became angry because lockdown completely shut down their economy. Many people in his village lost their jobs.  On one hand, the virus was killing people for which the lockdown was necessary. But on the other hand, lockdown was making it hard for people to feed their families as the economy was shut.  Mr. Ethan was in a dilemma. He was not sure which alternative to choose.  Will he keep the lockdown to stop the deadly virus from spearing or will he open shops and businesses to help the economy? Now, with a new festival at hand, and as a response from the pressures received from both the government and the consumers, Mr. Ethan and his political colleagues finally decided to open up businesses and shopping malls so the festival's shopping can continue. He asked his community to follow safety precautions while going out, but quickly found out that no one was following the safety rules at all.

Our main discussion in today's topic is very common problem around the world right now! 'If you were Mr. Ethan, then what would you do to stop the spread of the virus without impacting the economy?'
