New lines in excess of 250 kilometres per hour (160 mph) and existing lines in excess of 200 kilometres per hour (120 mph) are widely considered to be high-speed. The first high-speed rail system, the Tōkaidō Shinkansen , began operations in Japan in 1964 and was widely known as the bullet train. China had built over 29,000 kilometres (18,000 mi) of high-speed rail as of December 2018, accounting for two-thirds of the world's total.

This latest generation Acela has borne out of contract between Amtrak and Alstom. This has a travelling speed of 160 mph with more seats. It will provide service in the Northwest corridor of US- from Washington D.C. to Boston. It is under testing and it is expected to provide service from 2021.There are 28 trainsets of this new generation Acela.

An additional three passenger cars can be added if demand grows. The power cars include an Crash Energy Management system to help meet FRA standards while allowing a 30% reduction in train weight. These trains will also have USB ports, power sockets, WiFi, accessibility features, and other conveniences. The trainsets will be equipped with an active tilt system to allow higher speeds on curved portions of the corridor track.Along with track and signaling improvements, these will have regular speed of 160 mph (260 km/h) on some portions of the route, with a maximum possible speed of 186 mph (299 km/h). The trains themselves are designed for a speed of 220 mph (350 km/h) if the tilting mechanism is deactivated.  less

The engine for maglev trains is rather inconspicuous. Instead of using fossil fuels, the magnetic field created by the electrified coils in the guideway walls and the track combine to propel the train.
If you've ever played with magnets, you know that opposite poles attract and like poles repel each other. This is the basic principle behind electromagnetic propulsion.  less

It is the highest speed train architecture which works with a magnetic repulsion both to levitate the train up from the ground, which reduces friction to propel it forward. It was designed with a speed of 600 km/h.This design was made by a member of Tangerine Design transportation design team, who had participated in the development of the CRRC Maglev Train exterior surface design.

Developed by the state-owned China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) -- the world's largest supplier of rail transit equipment -- the sleek-looking train is scheduled to go into commercial production in 2021 following extensive tests. A Japan Railway maglev train achieved a top spot of 603 km/hour on an experimental track in Yamanashi in 2015, setting a new world record. The train will be able to reach these theoretical speeds thanks to its maglev design, which sees it travel on a magnetically powered cushion of air rather than using wheels that are in constant contact with a track. China already has the world’s fastest commercial maglev service in operation, which reaches 267mph (431 km/h) on its 18.6 mile (30km) journey between Shanghai’s airport and city center.  less
